Tree Service Job Categories: Removals, Pruning, Stumps, PHC, Storm and Consults on One Schedule

A tree company does very different kinds of work out of the same yard. Removals, pruning, stump grinding, plant health care, storm response and consults each need different people, different equipment, different timing and different pricing. Putting them all on one schedule without labels is a recipe for confusion. Job categories make the board readable at a glance, for the office and for the crews.

Why Categories Matter

In What Your Tree Crew Needs on Their Phone Before They Leave the Yard, we covered what crews see in the app. The job category is one of the first things on every stop, and it sets expectations instantly. A crew leader who sees Removals versus Stump Grinding knows what kind of day it is before reading another word.

For the office, categories turn a long list of jobs into a picture of the work mix. You can see at a glance whether a crew is overloaded, whether one kind of work is piling up, and where the week's revenue is coming from. TreeBossPro comes with six tree categories built in: Removals, Trimming and Pruning, Stump Grinding, Plant Health Care, Storm and Emergency, and Consults.

Removals and Trimming and Pruning

Removals are usually the biggest and most variable jobs on the board. They need the most careful sizing, the right climber and the right equipment, and they are the most likely to run long. When a Removals job lands on a crew's day, check that the day is not already full and that there is a flexible job behind it in case it runs over. Then make sure a stump grinding follow-up exists if the removal leaves a stump.

Trimming and Pruning is the steady core of most tree businesses. The jobs are smaller and more predictable, they group well by area, and many of them come back on a cycle. They are also the best filler around larger work, because a flexible pruning customer can usually slide a day without complaint. A crew whose day is all Trimming and Pruning should have its stops tightly grouped on the route map.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding jobs are short, usually follow a removal, and batch beautifully on the route map. Keeping them in their own category stops them from being buried inside the removal job and forgotten. It also lets you see at a glance how many grinds are waiting and whether the grinder is getting enough days on the schedule.

Many companies give the grinder its own route day or put grinds on the route of whichever crew is carrying the machine. Either way, the category makes those jobs easy to find and assign.

Plant Health Care

PHC visits are different again. Depending on your state's rules, they may need to be performed by a licensed applicator, and they come with record keeping. TreeBossPro chemical tracking keeps products with their EPA registration numbers, saved mixes, per-service application records with product, rate and amount, and applicator license numbers, with a chemical tracking report to pull it together.

A separate category lets you route PHC visits to the right person, run them as recurring programs and keep them from colliding with crew work. A later guide in this series covers PHC scheduling in more detail.

Storm and Emergency, and Consults

Storm and Emergency jobs jump the queue. Giving them a dedicated category makes it obvious how many hazards are waiting, where they are and how long each has waited. During storm season, filtering the board by this category is the fastest way to see the real backlog.

Consults are estimate visits, assessments and customer meetings. They take time on the schedule but rarely need a full crew. Keeping them in their own category lets you plan an estimator's or owner's day separately from crew days, and route consults by area just like any other stop.

Using Categories on the Board and in Reports

Read the board by category first, then by name. Look for imbalance: too many removals on one crew, stump grinding piling up, PHC visits drifting past their window, consults crowding the owner's crew days. Each one points to a specific scheduling fix.

Categories also feed your reports. Completed jobs by category show where your work and revenue come from each week and month, which helps you decide what to sell, which crews to add and which services to grow. The next guide looks closely at one category that runs on a rhythm all its own, plant health care. See how categories, the job board and reports fit together on the tree service scheduling software page.
